Question of the week: What’s your favorite drinking game?

Posted by Noah Davis On February - 17 - 20102 COMMENTS

After participating in a wonderful and timely event called the Beer Olympics over the weekend, we got to thinking: There are so many excellent drinking games, but it’s hard to pick just one. So we want to know, what’s your favorite? Beer pong? Caps? Quarters? Speed quarters? The possibilites are virtually endless.

As always, email, tweet, or just leave your thoughts in the comments. We’ll post our favorite answers on Friday.

Drink along with the State of the Union

Alright, we’ll continue the theme. Have you heard about the State of the Union drinking game?

“Invented” in 2002 by Princeton students Marc Mezler and Howard Deutsch — we have a hard time believing they were the first people to play such a game, but they get credit — the activity might be the only thing that makes the President’s yearly speech to the nation watchable. If Obama says the words “hope,” “change,” Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, or Pakistan take a sip. When “stimulus” is uttered, take a shot of espresso. If the camera zooms in on the First Lady’s arms, take a shot with your bicep curled. And so on.

You can see all the rules on the game’s Web site. We’re in as long as there are no drinks required when the audience starts clapping.

‘Life don’t get much better than this’

For those of you who are regrettably unaware, the title of this post was X-Man Gambit’s trademark slogan. You can hear it in many of the X-Men video games, which are convienently featured on your new Arkeg machine.

So what’s an arcade machine doing on a beer site, you ask? Well, for one, it’s awesome and includes 69 pre-loaded games such as Asteroids, Mortal Kombat II, and 1942. More importantly, however, is the fact that while you’re whiling away your time mashing your figures on the buttons, you can also be enjoying an icy cold beer provided by the built-in five-gallon kegerator in the base of the machine. At $4,000, the Arkeg ain’t exactly a steal, but it’s the cheapest video-game-kegerator that we know of.

As we said, life don’t get much better than this.

Finally, a safe drinking game

Posted by Noah Davis On May - 18 - 2009ADD COMMENTS

Drinking games get a bad rap, probably because they deserve to. Now there’s one you can play responsibly. Pukes and Staggers — which, if nothing else, has hands down, no contest the best name of any board game out there — seeks to help people have fun while drinking (a novel concept indeed).

“We know there is a lot of controversy right now over binge drinking, legal drinking ages, and drinking and driving, so we thought it appropriate to simultaneously release a campaign that promotes safe drinking with a designated game host in a safe environment,” said Brad Thayer, managing member of Happy Beer LLC, which sells the game. “We want to keep young adults off the roads and curb excess spending in a mad economy.”

You can purchase Pukes and Staggers here.
