DRAFT 150 Best Bars of 2009: Arkansas

By Noah Davis • Feb 4th, 2010 • Category: Best Bars 09, featured

We’ve scoured the country from Alaska to Hawaii and Portland, Maine to Portland, Ore., to find the bars where you’re guaranteed to sip unmatched suds. Romantic or boisterous, scuzzy or dressed to the nines, the flavor of the places where fine brew is served runs the gamut. Here, the 150 places where craft is king and fun comes in all fashions.

Today: Arkansas

Hot Springs Brau Haus
Hot Springs, Arkansas
Old World beer is alive and well at Hot Springs Brau Haus, an almost unlikely German beer joint in the heart of Arkansas. Although the bar only features a few, all-Spaten taps, it more than makes up for the limited draft selection with nearly 50 German, Belgian, Austrian, and Dutch bottled brews. The lineup includes celebrated breweries like Ayinger, Chimay, and Paulaner, but also lesser exposed brands like Corsendonk Pale Ale, Dinkelacker Stuttgard Dunkel, and Kozel Dark. Enjoy the suds alongside authentic sauerbraten, knackwurst, and schnitzel.

  1. Hello there, I just wanted to let you know I read your article on the top 150 beer bars in America. While I agree with the choices selected in the Chicago market, I wanted to add one that should be included in the next round up!The Tribes Alehouse in Mokena, Illinois (30 miles south of Chicago) features 41 handles, including cask beer, of the best craft selections available in the marketplace! The Tribes (opened December 1st 2010) is FAST becoming the destination for all things beer related on the south side! They feature a monthly beer school and monthly beer dinners. Including the eagerly anticipated Belgian Brunch on Feb 21!!
Please keep these guys in mind when you are traveling and make sure you chat with the owner Niall Freyne who is behind this beer oasis on Chicago’s South Side!

  2. I live in Central Arkansas and rarely make it to the Hot Springs Brau Haus, but agree it is a fine place. Also in the central area is Vinos Brewpub, Boscos Restaurant & Brewing Co and The Flying Saucer Draught Emporium, all in Little Rock. In northwest Arkansas there’s a fine brew house called Hog Haus Brewing that’s makes some quality beer.
