By Noah Davis • Feb 1st, 2010 • Category: Best Bars 09, featured
We’ve scoured the country from Alaska to Hawaii and Portland, Maine to Portland, Ore., to find the bars where you’re guaranteed to sip unmatched suds. Romantic or boisterous, scuzzy or dressed to the nines, the flavor of the places where fine brew is served runs the gamut. Here, the 150 places where craft is king and fun comes in all fashions.
Today: Alabama
The J. Clyde Hot Rock Tavern and Alehouse
Birmingham, Alabama
If you’re looking for cask-conditioned ale in the heart of Alabama, The J. Clyde is your place: The bar recently had the honor of being the first watering hole outside of Colorado to tap a cask of Tommyknocker Rye Porter. Aside from rotating casks, the bar also stocks a lineup of suds that pretty much spans the BJCP categorical listing — doppelbocks, witbiers, Belgian pale ales, and fruit beers are all four beers deep. If you can’t find what you’re looking for at this 150-plus-beer bar, well, that’s just impossible.
