Question of the week: East Coast or West Coast beer?
By Noah Davis • Oct 26th, 2009 • Category: question of the week
On Thursday, we are moving across the country. Jumping on a plane with our computer and three bags in tow and calling San Francisco our new home.* In honor of that decision, we’re making this a bi-coastal week here on DRAFTMag.com.
So, we want to know: East Coast or West Coast beers? Pretend you’re on a desert island and you can only pick the beers of one region. Do you go Left Coast or tried-and-true New England (or somewhere in the middle)? As usual, email us, tweet us, or just leave your thoughts in the comments section below.
* If anyone wants to find us a one-bedroom apartment in SF, that would be lovely.

Definitely the midwest, but I’m biased. I’m from Wisconsin, but I currently live in NYC. One of the first things I started to miss most (family and friends aside) was the beer. These east coast beers just don’t match up in my opinion.
I’d have to have all the West Coast beers on my island. Rogue, Mad River, Lost Coast, Bear Republic, Sierra Nevada, Stone Brewing, Anchor, Russian River, Lagunitas… hell that almost makes me WANT to be stranded on a desert island. If there were a pretzel tree of course. And cable.
How bout none? Where’s the love for the English and Belgium ales?
I live in the midwest and the only decent brew here is Goose Island. Or just some of the brewpubs in Wisconsin like great dane or ale asylum…other than that the midwest is pretty weak…Go west coast….rogue nation rise up!
Hmmm both sides have wonderful beers to be had but at the moment I think Id have to say west coast. Although it would be hard to part with Dogfish for sure…
dogfish head beats any midwest beer
Luckily, we don’t have to choose!
But if I was pressed, I’d have to say the West Coast.
Philadelphia, ya’ll. Dogfish, Yards, Stoudts, Weyerbacher, Troegs and so much more
I’ll give you Dogfish. Tasty beers. But no way any east coast beer takes a Sprecher Special Amber (Milwaukee) or Lakefront River West Stein (Milwaukee) or New Glarus Spotted Cow (New Glarus).
Left Coast fo sho: Telegraph, Firestone Walker, Stone, Rogue, Lagunitas, Humboldt, Lost Coast, Craftsman, Mendocino, Mad River Brewing, Anderson Valley, Steelhead, Bear Republic, Moylan’s, Bruery, AleSmith, Anchor, Russian River, need I go on?
East Coast!! Redhook Treblehook, Coffee Stout, and IPA, Long Trail Ale and IPA, Harpoon IPA, Allagash Belgium White, Seadog Blueberry Ale, and all Sam Adams brews
