Brits paying huge beer taxes
By Noah Davis • Jun 17th, 2009 • Category: Beer NewsAmericans aren’t the only ones struggling with increased beer taxes. Across the pond, the English are dealing with beer taxes that have risen 20 percent during the past year.
According to a story in Forbes, patrons are paying $.75 per pint, up from $.60. Among the 27 countries in the European Union, only people in Finland and Ireland pay more. (The lucky dogs in France, Germany, and Spain all shell out $.10 or less per pint.)
Mark Hastings of the British Beer & Pub Association disagrees with the increased levies. “What it clearly does is place U.K. brewers and pubs at a huge disadvantage because of increased tax burdens,” he says.
There’s nothing worse than a pub at a huge disadvantage.
