No to-go beer in Texas

By Noah Davis • May 14th, 2009 • Category: Beer News

A bill that would allow Texas breweries to sell beer to-go is dead.

The legislature was considered a long shot to pass because the powerful Texas beer distributors lobby opposed the measure, but state Rep. Jessica Farrar, D-Houston who sponsored it thinks she and her allies gained ground. (A similar bill in 2007 didn’t even receive a hearing; this version “got buried” after being approved by the Licensing & Administrative Procedures Committee.)

“We gained a lot of yardage this time but we didn’t get to the goal line,” Farrar said, using a Texas-approved football analogy.

Farrar plans to introduce another version of the bill in 2011, this time with a state senator as a sponsor.
