Lubbock, Texas going wet?

• May 6th, 2009 • Category: Beer News

The 210,000 residents of Lubbock, Texas could soon have a much easier time purchasing beer, wine, and liquor. On Saturday, the state’s largest “dry” town will hold a vote to decide whether to allow package sales inside the city limits. (Currently, beer is only sold on a quarter mile strip along U.S. Route 87.)

According to Ray Perryman, a well-known Texas economist, the bill will raise an additional $5.2 million in tax revenue, create more than 2,400 jobs, and increase annual spending in Lubbock by $251.6 million. One of the biggest proponents of the measure is the town’s Wal-Mart, which contributed $25,000 to the effort.

If we were the betting kind, we’d put money on the bill passing. We’re not sure it’s possible to stop the combined forces of the liquor lobby and Wal-Mart. Just get out of the way.
