Our commander-in-chief could use better taste in beer

By Noah Davis • Apr 13th, 2009 • Category: Beer News

In Beer Wars — DRAFTMag.com preview coming on Wednesday — filmmaker Anat Baron called the White House to find out Barack Obama’s favorite beer. He was unsuccessful but those resilient sleuths at the New York Daily News learned our President’s preferred brew is Budweiser.

While we can’t blame him for this — it is the choice of America, of course, and we doubt the poor guy has time to sit down and figure out his favorite craft brew while he’s trying to save the world — we think he needs his beer palate expanded and we want the readers of DRAFTMag.com help.

In January, Will Coghlan offered a few suggestions in a feature, but let us know what you think Barack should drink in the comments. We’ll call up the White House with your suggestions. We’re sure they’ll pick up.

  1. He could be simply pandering to the Bud drinkers rather than giving an honest answer. He is a politician after all.

  2. He should drink Mothership Wit by New Belgium. It’s both a great beer and he can appease the hip organic/save the planet crowd.

  3. I was thinking Prima Pilsner by Victory, it might be a nice segue from Bud, but Wit or Hef might be good starts as well.

  4. I’m thinking a national beer tour for the president, hit the highlights:

Stone Arrogant Bastard Ale (San Diego, CA), 21st Amendment Watermellon Wheat on draft, not can (San Fran), New Belgium Fat Tire (Fort Collins, CO), Four Peaks Kiltlifter (Tempe, AZ), Boulevard Unfiltered Wheat (Kansas City, MO), Schlafly Kolsch (St. Louis, MO), Great Lakes Brewing Company Elliot Ness Amber (Cleveland, OH), Sweetwater Blue (Atlanta, GA), Foothills Double IPA (Winston-Salem, NC), Duck-Rabbit Milk Stout (Farmville, NC) and Magic Hat #9 (Burlington, VT).

I find it hard to believe he wouldn’t be able to find a new favorite on such a tour.. and if nothing else he’ll have had enough good beer to have a hard time drinking another Budweiser.

  5. President Obama visited the Bethlehem Brew Works Sunday, April 20th, 2008. He said that he really enjoyed our Fegley’s ESB. Hard to believe that a Bud drinker would like an extra special bitter!
