DRAFT staff Super Bowl beer picks: Jessica Daynor

By Noah Davis • Jan 28th, 2009 • Category: Beer Events

All this week we’re running posts detailing the beers that DRAFT staff members will drink come Super Bowl Sunday. Today, managing editor Jessica Daynor explains what she’s downing and why she’s not rooting for the Cardinals despite living in Arizona.

I’m from Chicago and went to school in Wisconsin, so it’s pretty much sacrilegious for me to root against a blue-collar city, let alone support a team built on a fancy-schmancy stadium, fair-weather fans, and Kurt Warner’s five-o’clock shadow. Can you tell I’m bitter? Thus, I’ll be sipping Four Peaks 8th Street Ale; it’s based on an English bitter but drinks super-smooth, with a remarkable sweetness that harmonizes well with imported Kentish hops. (Hey, just because I’m anti-Cardinal doesn’t mean I can’t back the Phoenix craft brew scene.) But when the Steelers win on Sunday, I’m going to honor the Iron City by toasting with a working man’s beer: Miller Lite or Old Style (in a can, of course) should do the trick.

  1. Don’t you dare toast us with Iron City, Miler Lite, or Old Style. You are perpetrating a horrible stereotype!

How about something along the lines of Pittsburgh’s East End Brewing Company. They boast some pretty impressive stats on the BeerAdvocate Site. #1 Smoked Beer, #4 American Barleywine, #9 American Stout.

Scott Smith, Brewer/Owner is a working man, does nearly everything at the brewery, Toast him, not the unionized slackers who make that other Pittsburgh beer.

I beg of you to drink something good, and toast Pittsburgh with an open mind.
