Holiday-ish beers, round 16: Eel River Climax Noel
By Noah Davis • Dec 17th, 2008 • Category: Tasting notes
Finally, Santa can match his holiday beer to his suit: In another departure from the umber-colored winter brew, Eel River’s Christmas contribution is Climax Noel, an imperial red. Though it was released in November, this 8.0% ABV brew seems a better complement to this week’s whiteout conditions; its warming quality is obvious. The aroma is surprisingly sweet with a bit of spice; the color is naturally brown-red, with good clarity for the style. A cherry note leads the taste, followed by a bold alcohol flavor and good bitterness, though perhaps a bit too much malt for the style. Still, Climax Noel is a smooth, sturdy beer you can feel good about drinking: The brew is also certified organic.
