Australian beer rains on British competition

Back in the day, the British sent their criminals to Australia to play with kangaroos and rot in a sun-drenched jail (or if you will, gaol).

Finally, the Aussies have their revenge and it doesn’t involve covering Parliament in Vegemite. In a poll conducted at 717 JD Wetherspoon pubs across Britain, Barons Black Wattle Original Ale — brewed by an Australian company using the country’s ingredients — beat out every pint of English ale for best in show.

“This is just another example of something the Poms invented yet have lost to the Aussies,” Scott Garnett, managing director of Barons Brewing, said. We can only nod in confused agreement.
