Things we learned while listening to Nico Freccia (Chief Watermelon Officer) and Shaun O’Sullivan (Chief Hop Head) of San Francisco’s 21st Amendment Brewery discuss the canned versions of their best-selling “Brew Free! or Die” IPA and “Hell or High Watermelon” wheat beer during an Internet “WeBEERnar” yesterday afternoon.
There is no better way to make your friends insane with jealous than to tell them a brewery just Fedexed you two, 12-ounce cans of beer.
There is literally no end to the amount of “can” puns the pair of brewers can make.
Reasons why cans are better: They are greener, the beer tastes better, and “because we can.” (See what we mean about the can puns?)
The Watermelon Wheat, made with fresh watermelon, is an excellent summer beer, but we wouldn’t want to drink more then one or two at a time.
The IPA, on the other hand, is amazing. Before we opened it, Shuan explained, “You take your first sip and you’re like, ‘Whoa.’” We would completely agree. That said, at 7.0 percent ABV we might not be able to drink that many more than two before we ended up wandering aimlessly around The Haight.
Currently, the beers are available only in California and Alaska, but the brewery is hoping to expand to warm weather locations in the next year or so.
There might be something to this craft beer in a can thing.
Tell 21st Amendment to start shipping to Colorado - please! I missed getting to their booth at the GABF this year. I’ve heard a lot of good things about there beer. If it’s as good as Oskar Blues in a can, it “can”‘t be bad.
I think their beers are only available in California at the moment, but they have recently started contracting their can brewing out to a larger brewery.
Because of this, I would expect to see them grow their distribution in the future, but I certainly don’t know for sure.
As I recall, the contract brewery is in the upper midwest. Can’t remember which state but I would expect them to look to distribute in that area. Time will tell.
I’ve had craft brews in cans from Buckbean in Reno, NV and Caldera in Ashland, OR as well as from 21st Ammendment. They are just as tasty and very easy to store and ship. Looking forward to more craft brewers using cans.

Sounds awesome. Is the IPA available nation-wide? In Wisconsin?

Cold Spring in Minnesota is who is brewing 21st Amendment’s cans currently.
